What Does This X-ray Finding Indicate?

I m an old man of 72 years of age. In past I was a heavy smoker but I have quit smoking for the last 14 years. However I do take chewing tobacco. Recently I had some cough problem and got a chest xray that suggested right diaphragmatic hump with explanation that it. maybe on account of some old infection. I don t have any problems like fever or weakness and am perfectly healthy. Kindly explain the finding. Thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Right Diaphragmatic hump can be caused by multiple reasons, viz
1) Traumatic injury
2) Paralysis of the diaphragm
3) Lump or mass of liver pushing the diaphragm
4) COPD- Pneumonia causing erosion of lung tissues
5) Pulmonary fibrosis
6) Emphysema

Being a chronic smoker for long time the changes of causes from 4 to 6 are at highly likely to be responsible for hump but other possibilities must be ruled out too. So, it is not a simple to pinpoint the cause of the hump based on your description.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
