What Do Rare Polymorphonuclear Cells In My Lab Report Indicate?

What does Rare polymorphonuclear cells seen indicate? The second line of this lab report says Many squamous epithelial cells seen . And then #2 Rare Gram-positive cocci and Rare Gram-negative bacilli. That doesn t look good. (I m 65 yrs, recent basal cell carcinoma surgery on my ear). The reason I had this recent test done is because I m fighting an infection that is draining after a surgery: very near to where the sun don t shine. a ping-pong ball size cyst perhaps or pocket of what I don t know was removed but it had to drain after the surgery and its been going on for several weeks now and it doesn t seem to be improving. I ve taken AMOXI CLAV 875mg/125mgAMOXI /CL-OVL-WHT-APO-A C The sensitivity Report is even a little scarier. Organism 1 Staphylococcus aureus Moderate growth of Staphylococcus aureus Organism 2 Escherichia coli Light growth of Escherichia coli Could someone please help me understand what is going on? I m open to any questions! Cheers Brian

Hello,

The first part of these results come from some of the contents of the cyst or mass is placed on a microscope slide and examined under a microscope.

Polymorphonuclear cells are a kind of blood cell that is associated with infection.

Rare is not significant. Squamous epithelial cells are a normal part of the skin or the mass. Gram-positive cocci and gram-negative bacilli are two types of bacteria that were also identified with the microscope.

In the second part of the report, a sample of the material inside of the cyst was cultured for bacteria.

Culture results found two different bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus(the gram-positive cocci) and Escherichia coli (the gram-negative bacilli). Both of these bacteria are common causes of infection.

What you refer to as the sensitivity report(Organism 1 and2) is actually the culture result report. There is no sensitivity report in the information you provided.

Amoxicillin-clavulanate is an antibiotic that should kill these bacteria. It is not normal for such a cyst or abscess to be draining for weeks and still not improve.

You must return to the surgeon as soon as possible so the infection does not spread and to see what's causing drainage.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Arnold Zedd, Pediatrician
