Hi,
Hepatitis C is a viral infection can cause chronic infection. The infection is usually subclinical with minimal acute symptoms such as
jaundice, fever, etc. Chronic infection of
Liver with Hepatitis C can lead to
cirrhosis or may lead to cancer. Now a days, the chronic infection requires active treatment for the period of six months. The enzymes are little higher than normal but better than expected levels.
Since, you have the history of infection some 40 years ago, the infection if persists can cause scarring of liver which may ends in cirrhosis of the liver. Blood investigation, imaging studies and
biopsy of the liver tissue helps in the confirmation of the current infective status. Discuss with the doctor about the further investigations, if there are symptoms.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pradeepraj, General & Family Physician
