What Causes Fluctuations In The Liver Condition?

Hello,
My father-in-law has been having ALT (GPT) scores of 9, 42, 53, 82, 46, 70 on his most recent 6 blood tests from December 2009-today, January 2011.
Likewise his 6 most recent AST (GOT) scores have been 16, 21, 42, 40, 37, 54.
They paired up this way: DECEMBER 2009
AST (G0T) 16
ALT (GPT) 9

APRIL 2010
AST 21
ALT 42

JULY 2010
AST 42
ALT 53

OCTOBER 2010
AST (GOT) 40
ALT (GPT) 82

DECEMBER 2010
AST (GOT) 37
ALT (GPT) 46

AST (GOT) 54
ALT (GPT) 70

His medication is a blood thinner, a vitamin B12, Uriefu for prostate enlargement, glymperide for his type 2 diabetes and an L-Dopa called Pakistan (Japanese medication).

What could be causing these high and fluctuating ALT/AST liver #s?

Hi,

Usually ALT or AST values higher than "two times the upper normal limit", is considered abnormal ( in some countries, ALT or AST values of more than 100 are considered abnormal). Value of AST or ALT greater than 85 or above maybe investigated further.

Alcohol ingestion and obesity are common causes of slight elevation. NOTHING to worry.

Advice :
- abstinence from "Alcohol"
- decreased oil consumption (oily food)
- NO red meat
- green vegetables should be ingested daily
- use lemon juice (lemonade) once in a day
- reduce weight if overweight/obese
- "recheck liver enzymes after 6 to 12 months" and/or ultrasound.\

Any further questions are welcomed. Hope to answer your concern. Wish you good health.

Regards,
Dr Tayyab Malik
