What Could Painful Tongue With Little Bumps On It Post Having A Dental X Ray Indicate?

Hi there,

I recently went to the debtist and had some X-rays taken to check the health of my teeth.
When they took the X-rays they used a plastic/rubber utensil which stretched my mouth and dug slightly into my tongue.
Now, a week later, my tongue is quite painful, it has small little bumps on the side where it lays/rubs on my teeth.
It's getting quite painful and it's hurting when I'm eating.
Is it possible that the utensil used for the X-ray has caused some irritation? Or a possible allergic reaction?
It is painful and I'm just a little worried. Any ideas as to what it could be?
Kind regards
Chelsea

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

They are cold sore or canker sore they usually occur due to continues irritation or minor injury. there can be other reasons also like poor oral hygiene , hormonal changes or stress.

I would suggest you to :-

- Avoid hot and spicy food as it can increase pain .

- Do antiseptic mouth wash rinses like Chlorhexidine to prevent then from getting infection.

- Do hydrogen peroxide rinses . Mix equal amount of water and hydrogen peroxide .

- Do betadine rinses twice a day.

- Start taking multivitamin supplement containing vitamin B12 and folic acid .

- For pain apply gel containing benzocaine.

I condition doesn't start getting better then consult dentist or oral pathologist for proper evaluation . Doctor will examine physically . He/ she may prescribe antibiotic course or corticosteroid ointment .

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain and explanation of symptoms it seems that the x ray film or the sensor that has been used to to take the x ray has causes Traumatic injury to the side of tongue and floor of mouth leading to inflammation which caused blisters and pain..

BUT it is possible in case if the blisters and pain started the same day or the day after the x rays were taken..

But in case if it started a week later it is not due to the x ray and can be an allergic reaction to some food product or medicine or the bumps can be canker sores which commonly occur with pain and discomfort and may or may not be due to some underlying cause..

I would suggest you to consult a dentist and get evaluated and if it is due to traumatic injury you can apply or age over the sore areas for relief..
Sucking ice pops can relieve..
Salt water rinses can help..

In case of allergic reaction antihistamines like allegra or benadryl can be taken..
Gargle with 1 : 1 solution of milk of magnesia and benadryl can be relieving..
Salt water rinses can help..

In case of apthous ulcers oral intake of steroids can help..
