What Could Cause Chronic Diarrhoea Initially With Extreme Dehydration And Blood Loss, Tests And Stool Culture Are All Normal?

My 17 year old son has had diarhea for about 2 weeks. It was with blood the first week and he was hospitalized fro dehydration and extreme blood loss. He was treated for the dehydration and they ran a lot tests. All tests came back negative and his stool culture grew nothing. He has no other symptoms but the diarhea. He did not have a GI exam as they all thought it was viral.

Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.Ratnakar and I am pleased to assist you.
The most common cause is infection.
Since the stool culture did not reveal anything, then other causes should be looked in to. One most important is inflammatory bowel disease. A colonoscopy may be done to look in to the colon and find what is causing the bloody diarrhea.
I hope that answers your question.
Regards,
Dr.Ratnakar
