What Could Be Causing Aches In My Hands?

Hello, I have been having pain in my left wrist/hand for the past few weeks. It hurts mainly when it is bent and I am putting pressure or weight on it. For example, getting up from a chair and using my hands to push myself up. The pain and ache that i get from it travels to my hand as well, and I have been feeling aches in my arm as well. What could it be?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
I have gone through your query and understand your concern.
I suspect it to be due to carpel tunnel syndrome.
This is due to the compression of median nerve ( nerve supplying the hand) in the wrist.
There are may causes for carpel tunnel syndrome.
Some common causes are
1. someones carpal tunnel being unusually small genetically.
2. diabetes
3 .hyper or hypothyroidism
4. obesity
5. swelling when pregnant
6. developing a cyst or tumor in the wrist
7. arthritis

There are some simple strengthening exercises which will be helpful in reliving pain in carpel tunnel syndrome.
1. Press down on the palm of one hand with the palm of your other hand and resist the force. Then, alternate the exercise so that your opposite hand can practice the resistance training.
2. Hold your hand in the air and point your index and third fingers forward. Then, make clockwise circles in the air.
3. Hold your arm out in front of you. Use your free hand to bend your other hand and backward, and hold it there for five seconds. Repeat this move 5 to 10 times, and then try it with your other hand.

If the symptoms of carpal tunnel persist for a period of 6 to 12 months or longer, then surgery is usually the best option. The most common form of carpal tunnel surgery is open release surgery.

Hope this helps.

Wishing you goo health.
