hi and pleased to answer you
The lymph nodes are small organs which ensure filtration of the lymph. Lymph is a clear fluid that circulates in the
lymphatic system, a collection of vessels and organs scattered throughout the body.
The lymphatic system plays several roles: it drains the
interstitial fluid, in which the cells bathe, filter and ensures the defense of the organism using the lymphocytes (or white blood cells).
The lymph nodes are grouped along the lymphatic vessels and there are hundreds of them. Some lymph nodes, or groups of lymph nodes, are better known because they are sometimes perceptible: especially those of the neck.
Most ganglia are between 1 and 25 mm long and have the form of beans.
When they swell, either because of an infection (in most cases) or because of a tumor, the lymph nodes are often painful and palpable (they easily measure more than 1 cm in these cases). They are called adenopathy. The causes of adenopathy, that is to say abnormal swelling of the ganglia, are multiple. In most cases, some lymph nodes only swell, especially in the cervical region (head, neck, or ORL zone), in the cervical region (especially neck nodes), it may be a simple ORL infection (Pharyngitis, colds, flu, etc.), an infection of a
salivary gland, a
dental abscess, etc. When one or more lymph nodes begin to swell, it is considered to be cancer in about 1% of cases.
Some infectious diseases can lead to generalized
lymphadenopathy, in particular,
infectious mononucleosis,
toxoplasmosis, HIV.
