What Causes Sudden Drop In Hemoglobin Level?

Our GP asked me to run a CBC on my son 4 months ago when he had caught some infection.

the CBC showed normal hemoglobin. My son was 6 months old then.

some days ago he caught an infection that led to chest congestion and narrowing of air passages. A CBC was run again and it revealed below normal hemoglobin level.

is such sudden reduction in hemoglobin level possible?what may have caused it?
