What Causes Shivering, Body Aches And Loss Of Appetite?

Hi there, I hope you can help, After having the flu at christmas I developed tingly feet and legs and slightly in my hands. After blood tests and 2 mris they have said I possibly have viral myelitis but cant also rule out ms. I am being seen again in August. Last month I suddenly came over all shivery at work and had to come home where I slept alot and was achey and shivery and hot and a bit nauses for a couple of days. About a month later the same thing has happened. I am shivery then hot, feel a bit sick not a great appetite, really tired etc. I just wondered is this anything to do with the myelitis or not? Many thanks

Hello,

You have history of having viral myelitis, presently you are nauseous, loss of appetite, tired, get shivers, etc. Shivering is commonly caused due to hypothermia, dehydration, poor general health condition, anemia, low blood pressure, low blood glucose, etc. Medical conditions that may cause similar symptoms are neurological disorders, essential tremor, cold, etc. You are suggested to keep yourself warm, stay well hydrated (maintain sodium-potassium balance) so that your vitals are normal. Eat well and take adequate sleep. Stay away from stress (physical / emotional) and avoid addictions if any.

Take Acetaminophen or Combiflam, one SOS after food for relief from body ache and discomfort. If you have cold or viral fever you will need a course of antibiotics (Doxycycline). Get clinically examined, get necessary tests and investigations done. Myelitis may be the first sign of MS and may trigger numbness, pins and needles, loss of appetite, muscle spasms, weakness and paralysis in the arms and legs. Get assessed and treated for myelitis or developing MS. You will be given conservative treatment followed with Physical therapy.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
