What Causes Red And Puffy Eye In A Child Along With Yellow Discharge?

My 6 month old has one red, puffy eye that is producing a yellow discharge at a now constant rate. I used drops from when his sister had pink eye, but it seems to be getting worse by the hour. Should I continue the pink eye drops or does it sound like something else?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi. I am a pediatrician. Welcome to Healthcare Magic. Let me answer your query.
From you description it seems to be an active infection of the eye is going on. If your child was active, or having associated cough or cold, with not much of discharge from the eyes, then it must have been a viral infection, which would have resolved by 5-7 days even without any treatment.
But here, what is worrying to me is that your child has a constantly discharging eye and that too which is getting worse even after giving eye drops. It all points towards a probable bacterial conjunctivitis and immediate action is required.
I would recommend 1% tobramycin eye drops : 1 drop four times a day for both eyes and if there is no improvement even after 24 hours, a consultation with a doctor in person is recommended.
I wish your child a speedy recovery!
Hope i have addressed your query. Please get back to me if you have any further questions. I would be happy to help. Thank you.
