What Causes Recurring Bladder Infections After Intercourse?

well, i haven t had any STD s or STI s. I have had repeated rough intercourse within the past couple of years and I have been getting reoccuring bladder infections. I was taking a bath the other day and I noticed there were a few air bubbles that came out. They were very very small, but nevertheless.... it is a curious discovery. Is there any explanation? Or is it just that there is air? (I actually am seeing a doctor about my bladder infection soon)

Hallow Dear,

What you are referring to repeated bladder infection could due to burning urination. It could be due to one of the following causes:

1. Mostly due to rough intercourse as you have mentioned, there could be irritation and inflammation of external opening of urethra. Inflamed tissues get infected easily. So infection of external urethral meatus would rise to the urinary bladder causing urinary bladder infection. It may further ascend to the kidneys too - known as Honeymoon Pyelitis. This would lead to lower abdominal pain with burning urination.

2. You have urinary infection for a long and have not been treated effectively and completely. This leads to chronic urinary infection which gets flared up intermittently.

3. You might be having crystals passing through the urine. Crystaluria does cause burning urination.

Routine urine examination will differentiate the diagnosis. If it is crystalurina, you will have to modify the diet depending up on the types of crystals. Also Drink plenty of water. If infection is found, get culture and sensitivity test done on the urine. It will identify the causative organisms and the antibiotics to which they are sensitive. Accordingly, take the appropriate antibiotics in prescribed dosages and for complete schedule.

Chronic urinary infections are known to relapse. Hence, please get the urine tested every month for next three months. You may have to repeat the course of antibiotics every month for three times.

4. The fact that you are finding froth at the vaginal opening strongly suggests that you are having vaginal discharge. Trichomnal vaginal discharge is frothy greenish white. This discharge may be associated with fungal infection also. Such discharge causes excoriation and soreness of vulva leading to burning micturition at the end of urination. Please get examined internally to differentiate the type of vaginitis. Trichomonal infection can be treated with Metronidazole while fungal infection can be treated with local antifungal cream or ovules. Along with, local use of Lactobacilli preparations like ovules or Lactacyd will help cure the condition effectively.

These types of vaginitis are transmitted sexually. Hence, both the partners should take the treatment simultaneously and observe sexual abstinence till both of you are declared completely cured. Also, in addition, both of you:
* Shave the private parts clean
* Clip the nails short
* boil underwear everyday
* use panty liners (for you)

Please report to the Gynaecologist.

I hope this helps you,

Dr. Nishikant Shrotri
