What Causes Persistent Severe Abdominal Pain, Belching And Vomiting?

My son in law is in the local VA hospital. He has been having sever pain in the abdomin, sterum region and in his back with severe gas, bleching, nausa, vomiting, at times only voimiting green bile. He has lost 30 lbs and no one can seem to give us an answer. If he eats anything other than dry toast, plain baked potatoe, it comes back. If it doesn t come back up thru vomiting, he gets really bad diarrhea. They have done lots of test, so far all we know is the stomach scope gastritis, they did biopsies, no results yet. The gall bladder test showed an ejection fraction of 16% but no stones. They did upper GI, Barium Swallow with small bowel follow thru and they did tell him that the barium was in his small intestine way too fast, within minutes. He has been in the hospital for over a week now and we don t know what to expect or what to ask???? Please offer your thoughts on what we should be looking for or asking from here. Thanks!

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The cause of his symptoms is self-explanatory as he is either getting vomiting after certain foods or if no vomiting then loose stools and also evident by the barium meal follow through test that shows fast evacuation.

All this indicates towards IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) that is irritable bowel disease superimposed by intolerance to certain foods. Take a consultation of a Gastroenterologist for clinical evaluation, correlation with reports already done, any additional investigations like CT scan and colonoscopy and relevant blood, stool and urine tests.

If all the tests are normal, then the treatment is for IBS and he needs to control the stress and/or anxiety to get a proper relief. Avoid all the foods and beverages that instigate or enhance the problems. Change of lifestyle, work atmosphere, relationships all help a lot.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant
