What Causes Persistent Fever Despite Taking Medication?

My 8 year old granddaughter has a fever of 102.5. She started antibiotics this afternoon and I have been alternating Tylenol and acetemeaphin since 2 this afternoon. The Tylenol doesn t seem to be reducing her fever. Should I take her to the hospital?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi
Thanks for posting on HCM
Fever could be caused by many medication conditions:
-Viral infections
-Bacterial infections
-Malaria
-Systemic inflammatory conditions
-And others
The treatment of fever is always with anti-pyretics like tylenol and etiologic management.
I will suggest you see the Doctor to investigate the cause of the fever than to do a blind management.A malaria test if any exposure, a blood culture/sensitivity, full blood count tests will be needed to know cause.Even if the problem is caused by a bacteria, not all bacteria will respond to the antibiotic you are giving to the child. In the meantime
-continue with tylenol
-Give the child plenty of fluids
-Rest
-Dress the child lightly
Hope my answer will help you

General & Family Physician Dr. Nishikant Verma's  Response
Fever is a symptom of an underlying disease. There are many causes of fever such as malaria, typhoid, infectious mononucleosis, TB, Dengue etc. Paracetamol is an anti – pyretic and it brings down fever.
Advice
1.     Azithromycin 500 mg daily per oral for 3 days
2.     Paracetamol 500 mg per oral if fever occurs
3.     Cold water sponging if fever is more than 100 degree Farenheight
4.     Investigations – CBC, ESR, Widal test, blood smear for malarial parasite, and dengue NS1 antigen
Consult a doctor with reports if fever is not relieved by above measures.
Thanks
