What Causes Persistent Burning Sensation In The Abdomen?

My husband broke his back 5 years ago. He is on a lot of pain meds. Obviously he has stomach issues. We know that he has a hernia at the top of his stomach/bottom of the esophagus. He said his stomach is burning and he s been having shooting pains all day. Worse than he s ever felt it. He has laid down, which is really unlike him. Should I be worried?

Hi,

As per your clinical history is concerned, do a clinical examination by your Doctor [Gastro] and to know exact cause do an endoscopy. Discuss with Doctor about prescription medication like [Pantoprazole and Baclofen] and do follow lifestyle modifications like this -
1) Try to maintain a healthy weight. If your weight is healthy, work to maintain it. If you are overweight or obese, work to slowly lose weight no more than 1 or 2 pounds a week.
2) Try to avoid tight-fitting clothing. Clothes that fit tightly around your waist put pressure on your abdomen and the lower esophageal sphincter.
3) Avoid foods and drinks that trigger heartburn. Everyone has specific triggers. Common triggers such as fatty or fried foods, tomato sauce, alcohol, chocolate, mint, garlic, onion, and caffeine may make heartburn worse. Avoid foods you know will trigger your heartburn.
4) Eat smaller meals. Avoid overeating by eating smaller meals. Don't lie down after a meal. Wait at least three hours after eating before lying down or going to bed. Elevate the head of your bed. If you regularly experience heartburn at night or while trying to sleep, put gravity to work for you. Place wood or cement blocks under the feet of your bed so that the head end is raised by 6 to 9 inches.
5) Try to avoid smoking and avoid drugs like (nitrates, anticholinergics, tricyclic antidepressants) and (NSAIDs, potassium salts, Alendronate etc.)

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
