What Causes Palpitations And Skipped Heart Beats?

Hi, I'm a 25 year old female who only just started having heart palpitations over the last year, year and a half. When they first started they were coming on regularly and were increasing in intensity until I quit a birth control I was on. Since then the palpitations got more infrequent and now they're just slight flutters or skipped beats every now and again. Today however while I was sitting down I felt dizzy and lightheaded and like I was going to pass out, I checked my pulse and it felt like it was getting slower and slower which scared me because I could almost start counting seconds between beats, I thought I was going to pass out. The episode lasted a few minutes before my heartbeat began to increase again. Because I had become scared my heartbeat was really fast until I calmed down again. Should I see a doctor about this? I was tested for diabetes about 9 months ago and it came back negative, when I was getting my heart checked out around the time the palpitations started they put me on a device I kept on for about 3 days monitoring my heart rate (I can't remember the name of it right now) but it came back fine. I do a 20 minute cardio work out every day, and lift weights every other day to try and keep somewhat in shape. As far as i know I have no other health concerns, I rarely get sick

Cardiologist 's  Response
Hello,

Yes, you should consult a cardiologist and get a basic cardiac evaluation done which in your case includes an ECG, Echocardiography and a 24 hrs Holter morning test.

Kindly get these tests done as it’s important to understand the nature of underlying arrhythmia that is happening.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhanu Partap, Cardiologist
