What Causes Painfully Swollen Lymph Gland Under The Ear?

I have what I think is a swollen gland on the right side of my neck under my ear. It is egg-size and painful to the touch. I hurts when I turn my head and my ear and jaw throb. I was given an antibiotic and have been taking it for 4 days, but no change. Can I do anything more?

Hi,

As per your complain it seems that swollen gland under the ear on right side which is of the size of egg and painful to touch. It seems to be most probably due to causes like infection in the salivary gland that is Parotid gland that is a major structure present in that location while it can also be due to swollen group of lymph nodes.

I would suggest you to consult an Oral Physician or an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like x ray or MRI scan can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly. You can be advised antibiotics and anti inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen and along with oral medication injection of antibiotic and steroid can also be given if swelling is severe. You can also be advised cool compresses over the swelling for pain relief and reducing swelling.

Hope this information helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks and regards,
