I am 47 and have been diagnosed with Diabetes. I was an elite athlete as a child into early adulthood. I developed gestational diabetes when I was pregnant at age 44. I have had hypos which I thought was very unusual in Tyoe 2 diabetes. I have always been very thin, dropping weight without trying esp if stressed ( this happens to my father) . My other blood profiles are normal. I do recall often being not quite right if I hadnt eaten , even back before my twenties. Is this typical of Type 2? I thought Type 2 diabetic were generally overweight and unfit.
Dear madam i can understand your concern. there are many varieties in type 2 diabetes,As you rightly said obesity will be there in most of type2 diabetes. insulin resistance will be the main pathological factor in them. But there are a small subset of population called as lean type 2 diabetes in which there will be insulin secretory defect along with insulin signaling defect. during early stage of type 2 diabetes its possible to have hypos due to mismatch of insulin secretion after food absorption. i suggest you to follow balanced diet and mild exercise like 45 mins of walking. At you age mild exercise will help in bone strength and prevention of calcium loss. In case of severe hypoglycemia at multiple times of day its advisable to meet an endocrinologist for further work up. Regards Dr vamsi krishna Diabetologist
