What Causes Loose And Foul Smelly Stools In A Child?

I have a 5 yr old who has recently been having several loose stools/foul smelly stools . This has been occurring since Sunday and while the number of times she has had to use the bathroom has decreased, the stools are nonetheless very soft. there are no other symptoms as she is not complaining of any stomach pain, and does not have a fever or other symptoms. Should i take her to a doctor or just keep my eye on it?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It will be safe to continue watching her. Uncomplicated diarrhea usually lasts no longer than the better part of a week. Her body needs the nourishment it gets from food in order to repair the injured intestinal lining. By all means have her eat and drink anything she wishes. When the intestines are upset, it changes the bacteria pattern in the intestines and that can change the odor of the stool.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
