What Causes Smelly Stools In A Child?

Hi. My son who is now 3 years old has always had really smelly soft stools that will smell the whole house. He s not in any pain & is always very energetic. What causes this awful smell in stools? Should I take him to the doctors? Or a change in diet??? Pls help.

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Usually this happens with constipation. If you are sure he is not constipated (tight/infrequent/painful stools), try giving him more fruits and vegetables. This might offer some help. Also, let him drink enough fluids. Usually bad smell originates from the protein source(egg, dairy, meat, chicken, pulses). Hence, try different protein sources to see any change.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
