What Causes Kidney Pain After Quitting Alcohol?

My boyfriend is an alcoholic. A couple weeks ago he went a day and a half without a drink and began having pains in his side. He said it was his kidney and that it was a crampy/stabby pain. Does this sound like kidney disease and if he is willing to try to quit drinking, what can we do to avoid major medical issues?

These are not usually directly associated. Kidney stones have many indirect connections: they occur in the same groups. Overnutrition, western diet, red wine have stuff that can find its way into kidney stones.

This assumes kidney stones and there are very many other problems (mostly not kidney) that can cause back pain.
