What Causes Intermittent Fluttering In Chest?

I feel a fluttering in my chest, left side, right below the rib cage. It is intermittent, faster than my heart beat, and lasts from 5 minutes to a half hour. No pain at all. I can look down below my bottom left rib and actually see the chest area of the flutter move up and down with each random thump. My wife checks my heart beat over my heart and the beat is steady. The flutter(thump) and my heartbeat are not at all synchronized.
