What Causes Inter Menstrual Bleeding?

I have bleeding in between my cycle. A doctor prescribed regestrone. When i started 1st cycle of regestrone i started bleeding within 1 week of taking medicine. I still continued totake to finish 20 day regestrone. After which periods came almost 2 months later. For 2nd cycle also periods came after almost 2 months. In my last cycle now. I started regestrone 9 days ago. But i have been spotting for 2 days and i feel most likely to start my periods again too.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Irregular bleeding can be caused by different reasons. Anovulatory cycles which cause problems with progesterone level can be a cause and probably that is why you doctor prescribed it.
On the other hand the hormonal causes as above can be considered after we rule out other structural problems.
To better evaluate the reason for the irregular bleeding and rule out structural causes:
1- Pap test if you are over 21 years of age or more than 3 years that you are sexually active and have not had the pap test in the last 2-3 years it would be good to have it done.
2- A vaginal ultrasound would be very good to rule out any fibroids or other structures that might develop in the uterus
3- if you have secretions with bad odor or pain during intercourse having tests for chlamydia and gonorrhea is recommended.

If all the above tests come out normal than hormonal causes of the irregular bleeding (low progesteron due to anovulatory cycles) can be the cause and treatment consists of oral combined contraception for 3-4 months or oral progesteron for 10 days each cycle starting on day 14 of the cycle (this is very likely you are using now).

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Kind regards,
Antoneta Zotaj, MD
