What Causes Elevated Levels Of AST And ALT?

AST level is 205 and ALT level is 401. They are scheduling an ultrasound. I m not a heavy drinker just an occasional glass of wine - maybe one every couple of weeks. In the past I ve had liver function tests that were only slightly elevated but then the dr. stopped testing when one came back normal. These levels have me concerned though. I m 43, not obese.

Hello

High ALT may indicate liver injury. It may be due to many reasons like hepatitis, alcohol intake, altered lipid profile, medicines, auto immune causes etc.
AST in non specific and it increases in many conditions.

You may need few more investigations like viral markers and ultrasound of abdomen.

I suggest tablet ursodeoxycholic acid 300 mg twice daily for three months to my patients. It helps in regeneration of liver cells.
Proper treatment depend upon findings.

Get well soon.
