What Causes Discoloration On The Tip Of The Toe?

my husband has a discoloration on the tips of a few of his toes. it looks like bruising, but is not a bruise. It is just dark purple in color. he said that there is no pain of discomfort, except sometimes when his feet get hot it can be kind of itchy. any idea of what it is?

1. fungal infection
2. pigmentation disorder

a fungal scrapping and microscopic examination of the KOH-mount smear might be of help before consulting a dermatologist.
