What Causes Discoloration Of Tongue?

For the last month and a half my tongue has been different in colour. It started looking white and furry, the doctor gave me medication for oral thrush which didn't work so then i was given antibiotics as they thought it could be a bacterial infection, that also didn't work. I have been back to the doctor on numerous occasions, they suggested scraping my tongue and use a mouth wash. I have been doing so and the front part of my tongue now looks much better but the back half is still a different colour, some of it brown and some white. Im very worried about this as i keep reading all sorts of things about tongue cancer. I don't feel i can go back to the doctors again so i'm just wondering whether i should pay a visit to my dentist, i did see him mid feb and he didn't notic anything abnormal!

I hope you can help, thanks, Claire
