What Causes Difficulty In Visualizing Fetal Pole During Pregnancy Scan?
Hi , my wife went to the doctor for her 8 week sonogram. Her bloodwork revealed high hormone levels, however the the transvaginal sono did not show a fetal pole. Throughout the sono, the sonographer was commenting on how full her bladder was. Is it possible that this affected the image?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, I understand your concern. - Actually full bladder helps USG scanning. It is not known to obstruct the scan. - Fetal pole is usually visible by 6 wks ( in vaginal USG to 8 weeks Abdominal)USG I would advise you , -to repeat USG after 1 week. Many a times fetal pole appears at this stage. - If it is not seen, consult your doctor, it can be a chemical pregnancy ( blighted ovum)& need expert advise & termination. Thanks.
