What Causes Diarrhea And Gas Post Tonsil Removal?

I had my tonsils removed on March 5th of 2012. 4 days after surgery my digestive system became painful and I've had irregular bowel movements (excessive diarrhea) and horribly painful gas on numerous occasions. Is this normal? If so, what can I do to correct my digestive system?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain diarrhea and excessive gas formation after tonsillectomy is not due to surgery but it seems to be most probably due to the medication side effects like antibiotics and painkillers that are given after surgery..
These medications disturbs the good bacteria present in the intestines as well as disturbs the normal functioning of the intestines leading to diarrhea and excess gas formation..
I would suggest you to take proton pump inhibitor like Omeprazole empty stomach in morning and once before dinner at night..
You can also take loperamide to control the loose motions..
Fluid replacement therapy is advised that includes drinking oral rehydration solution and other fluids to recover for dehydration and electrolyte loss..
Take a soft diet and include foods like banana and cereals in diet..
Avoid keeping stomach empty and eat small meals every 2 hours..
In case of no resolution consult your treating physician or a Gastroenterologist and get evaluated..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
