What Causes Blisters And Peeling Of Skin While On Gabapentin?

my mom takes gabapentin prescribed by her rheumatologist. we were just researching side effects and one of the possible side effects was blistering peeling or loosening of the skin. for the last 3-4 months the palms of her hands have been peeling and cracking severely. she has tried every lotion and wears rubber gloves at night to bed after applying lotion. it has helped a little bit but not much. she has been on the medicine for about a year. she has an appointment in may to see the dr and we are wondering if its possible the gabapentin is causing the problem w/her hands. I also saw there are different brands of the medicine but her prescription bottle just says mfg amneal. she takes 100mg twice a day

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of blisters and peeling of skin while on Gabapentin which seems to be due to infection of hair follicles leading to folliculitis and it could be due to fungal infection as well. It could be due to blockage of skin pores with bacteria and sebum. Need not to worry. It could be due to compromised immunity of body which is making you susceptible for recurrent infection. Also blisters and peeling can occur due to allergic reaction . I would suggest you to clean that area properly with antimicrobial agent. Apply little pressure on that area with cotton dipped in warm water to ooze out the pus properly. Use calamine lotion on that to resolve itchiness. Apply betadine over it. Use of corticosteroid ointment is helpful. Take antibiotics orally to prevent further infection. Your symptoms will start resolving in 3-5 days. If it keeps on persisting visit dermatologist once to find out any hidden cause for your symptoms.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
