What causes black specks in the urine?

I am 44 female with SLE. For the past 6 months or so I have been having black specks in my urine off and on. Sometimes there are several black specks, sometimes just one, and sometimes none. My urine has a strong smell which my daughter can come into the bathroom after I have gone and complain of the smell. Over this period of time, every time I have had a check up with my doctor there has been blood found in my urine sample. The first time I was treated with antibiotics, but nothing has been done since. I was given a screen to catch these tiny black specks and got 2 of them (one larger than the other) and took them back for observation in the lab. These came back as unable to identify . Since then, my doctor has been assuming these specks are kidney stones. I have no pain when they pass through my urine, and most times I wouldn t even know if I have not gotten into the habit of looking in the toilet every time I pee now. I used to smoke but have quit for 18 weeks.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Black specks in urine can be indicative of Kidney disorders and can be due to the presence of stones, infection or inflammation in the urinary tract as the ureter.

If there are other symptoms such as fever, back pain present along then possible if the infection is likely.

Sometimes conditions as Arthritis can also present with black particles in urine but this is to be correlated with all other symptoms.

I will advise you to get a Urine test done which will help in ruling out the exact cause. Meanwhile, drink lots of water. Restrict smoking, alcohol and caffeinated drinks.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
