What Causes Abnormally Heavy Menstrual Bleeding?

I m having heavy menstrual bleeding more than normal! It just gushes out as if I was using the bathroom. It s been doing this for two full days now and it is only doing this early in the morning and around this time at night! I m having to stand over a trash can it s so bad

Hi, thanks for your question.

I'm really sorry about the inconvenience.

Such heavy bleeding may be due to hormone imbalance, miscarriage, fibroids, or ovarian diseases.

First thing I do for patients with heavy periods is to run a pregnancy test to be sure it is not a miscarriage or an abnormally placed fetus. If that is excluded i schedule them for an ultrasound scan of the pelvis to exclude the above causes.

Visit your doctor as soon as you can for the evaluation. However, take iron supplements, pain medications such as ibuprofen if you feel abdominal pain, and tranexamic acid to reduce the volume of blood.

The visit to your doctor is to detect the cause and avoid a recurrence.
