What Causes Abdominal Pain, Headache And Fever In A Child?

6 year old with headache, stomachache and temp since Fri night. Sat went to dr where she vomited and had 102.2 with small ulcer near back of throat. She tested negative for rapid strep with no call today about test growing out positive. Temp goes down with motrin, but her tummy can t tolerate it. Tylenol is not as effective bringing down temp. Temp in between doses is up to 103.3 now. Thoughts?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Is there any throat pain or cold? Fever, headache, abdominal pain and vomiting might suggest a viral illness, urine infection or beginning of a gastroenteritis. Even if it is a simple viral, it will take 48-72 hours for fever to come down.

If she is otherwise playful and feeding as usual, we need not worry. Give her motrin 3 times daily for 2-3 days. Giving after food with some drinks/juice might improve tolerability. Take her back to pediatrician if fever continues beyond 72 hours, fresh symptoms appear, or she becomes lethargic and not feeding well.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
