What Can Cause Strong Abdominal Pains, nausea, vomiting And Persistent Cough?

Hello. My mum has a serious health problem, but doctors can't understand what's her problem. The problem started years ago and now it's getting worse. She has strong abdomen pains, nausea and vomiting and she coughs all the day lately. She says that she feels her pains come from the the bladder or intestine. Another thing is that her abdomen started to swell. A month ago she stayed in hospital for pneumonia, but she had the same symptoms she has now. Her doctor says that probably all the problems are created by the thyroid gland but he's not sure.I'll be very grateful if you could help me. I'm sorry for my English ,but I tried to be quite clear.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Pain in abdomen, bloating, nausea, vomiting and so on cannot be due to thyroid problem. Most important reason can be intestinal obstruction or even irritable bowel syndrome.

Hence, I would advise you the following in such a situation:
- Enteroclysis by Barium or CT scan contrast can give the proper diagnosis.
- Capsule endoscopy, colonoscopy can help further.
- Tests of blood, stool and urine.

If there is a positive finding this can be well diagnosed and well treated. If all the investigations are normal, then this may be IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome).

If there is an intestinal obstruction you have to get this operated and the specimen to be sent for biopsy to know the exact cause. Further management can be done as per the findings.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant
