What Are The Side Effects Of Taking Crestor?

I am a 44 years old, Asian Indian male. My doctor has prescribed Crestor 10 to me. However I am seriously scared due to its side effects. Further I had taken Rozavel F earlier for around 2 years and then have stopped taking it for last 1 year. I have experienced severe back muscle pain in last 1 year and suspect rozuvastatin causing the same. How can I know whether rozuvastatin is suitable for me?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Rozavel – F contains rosuvastatin and fenofibrate. Back pain might be due to fenofibrate component of Rozavel F.
The common side effects of rosuvastatin are headache, dizziness, constipation, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, myalgia, chest pain, peripheral oedema/swelling, depression, insomnia, rash, paraesthesia, asthenia, abnormal liver function test.
These side effects are seen in early stage of treatment and will spontaneously resolve on continued use.
Rosuvastatin is the most effective medicine for treatment of high cholesterol level. Besides this, there are lifestyle and dietary changes which can bring down you cholesterol level.
You can check the suitability of rosuvastatin by doing serum creatine kinase – MM (CK-MM). If level is more than 5 times the normal upper limit of CK-MM then consult your doctor for change of dose and medicine. If level is less than 5 times then you can continue it indefinitely.
Advice
1.     Continue rosuvastatin as suggested
2.     Take rosuvastatin at bed time
3.     Do not stop any medicine without your doctor’s suggestion
4.     Exercise – start workout in gym at least for half an hour for 4 – 5 days in a week regularly. Start with a balanced mix of cardio, weight training and flexibility exercises
5.     Avoid eating high energy foods such as cakes, chocolates, chips etc.
6.     Avoid alcohol and smoking
7.     Increase consumption of high fiber diet such as wheat bread, dry date, and vegetables
8.     Drink 3 – 4 liters of water daily
9.     Chew the food properly to make it easily digestible
10.     Avoid excess intake tea and coffee after meal
11.     Avoid oily & spicy food
12.     Investigation – lipid profile
