Very Heavy Periods, Distended Stomach And Fibroid. Suggested Hysterectomy. Will Removal Of Fibroid Reduce Stomach Distention?

Hi, I have a fibroid about 4 cm's...it has grown .5 in 5 months. I also have a 9 in regards to my iron, very heavy periods, and require vitamin and b12 supplements. My stomach is distended and my gyno is recommending hysterectomy. Should I continue to research other options? I have children and am not planning to have more and am 42 years old. Also will removal of fibroid reduce my stomach distention?

Hi,

A fibroid is a common disease that happens commonly in females who are elderly. Your doctor is correct in telling you to get a hysterectomy. This is because the fibroid occurs in the wall of the uterus. A hysterectomy is removal of the uterus. This is why if you remove the uterus, the swelling in your abdomen is automatically removed.

You should continue the medication you are on currently and also add iron to your diet. In this way you will be able to recover your iron back to normal levels.
