Tingling In Left Thigh, Calf, Moving To Front Shin, More While Lying Down. What Could Be This?

Hi doc, I'm turning 65 in two months and in my opinion, in good health. I haven't suffered anything in the past except the bug. I don't consider myself an overweight male, 5'10" at 230. Lately I've been experiencing a tingling (electrical like feeling) first in my left thigh, now on the inside of my right calf. It seems to be moving to the front shin. The outer portion of the affected area feels numb, but when I touch it, it feels like I'm touching below the skin which feels very sensitive (like sending an slight electrical shock) I notice the symptoms more when I'm lying down or just seating. What's up Doc?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

All your symptoms goes in favour of LUMBAR DISC DISEASE.

The initial management of your problem will be as follows -

* avoid lifting heavy weights
* avoid forward bending activities
* Use a lumbosacral back support
* Intermittent pelvic traction
* Maintain optimum body weight,if you are obese
* Physiotherapy to strengthen your back muscles. Physiotherapy has to be done only after the acute pain has subsided.
* Judicious use of analgesics and muscle relaxants.

If you dont find any relief, consult an orthopedic surgeon and follow his advice.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
