Teeth Don T Line Up Right, Stiff Sore Neck Radiating Down Shoulders, Numbness In Arms. Any Relation ?

I have noticed this week that my teeth don't line up right and I'm holding my jaw differently. I have also had stiff sore neck radiating down my shoulders with numbness in my arms and hands. Not sure if they're related or not. I have hashimotos and high blood pressure. I have felt very anxious, stressed and hyper but again may or may not be related? I'm 55 yr old overweight female. I take levrothyroxin, lisinopril, and Zoloft.

Hi
Thank you for your question to HCM.

Stiff and sore neck with numbness in hands and arms results from cervical spondylosis. This is the process of degeneration in the cervical intervertebral discs and joints. The progression of degenerative process leads to sore neck. Gradually the space for the nerves is compromised by bulging discs and bone spurs leading to pinching of the nerves that commonly causes radiating pain as well as numbness in arms and hands.

The jaw symptoms are unlikely to be related to cervical spondylosis.

Hope this is helpful. I would be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

There is no relation between your teeth and jaw problem and the stiff & sore neck with pain in the shoulders.

Stiff neck and radiating pain in the arms and hands is due to cervical disc disease.

The conservative management of this condition is as follows -

* Soft Collar: Soft collar allow the muscles of the neck to rest and limit neck motion. This can help decrease pinching of nerve roots with movement. Soft collars should only be worn for short periods of time, because long-term wear can decrease the strength of neck muscles.

* Medicines: Analgesic are needed in the acute phase. Muscle relaxants are essential for relieving muscle spasms once the acute pain subsides. Neurotropic vitamins like METHYLCOBALAMINE (activated Vit B12) or PREGABALIN will help in alleviating the neuropathic pain.

* Cervical traction: may enlarge the disc space, permitting the prolapse to subside. Intermittent cervical traction for not more than 30 minutes at a time. Weight upto 8kg can be added.

Physiotherapy: Once the acute phase of pain has subsided, Isometric strengthening exercises of the paravertebral muscles are started. Improving neck strength and flexibility with simple exercises may lessen discomfort and pain. Moist heat can be useful

* Epidural steroids: are useful for patients with severe radicular pains in the limbs. Cortisone is a powerful anti-inflammatory preparation and so its injections into the "epidural space" can decrease swelling as well as pain.

If your symptoms are not resolving with the above measures, you may need a surgical decompression of the disc.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
