Teenager. Increasing Jaw Pain In Joints With Popping. No Other Symptoms And No Dental Problems. On Tylenol. Advice
My daughter, 18, is complaining of jaw pain ( right side) in the joint of the jaw off and on for a week or so... tonight she asked for tylenol because of the pain. She has also mentioned something along the lines of her jaw "popping" - I thought of wisdom tooth, but we went to dentist last month and he took xrays and did not mention any problems with her wisdom teeth. She has no other symptoms such as those of a cold or ear infection. Should I see her doctor about this? or seek an ENT specialist? Was thinking it would just pass in a couple days but seems to be lingering and or getting worse. She goes off to college soon -- the 22nd of this month. ( I also considered stress). Thanks for your help and advice.
You need to get her Temporo-mandibular joints assessed by a doctor/Oro-Maxillary surgeon, the pain can arise from this joint.Popping out or dislocation may occur while yawning or other mandibular movements. The cartilage between the bones may be affected ,arthritis and other diseases may also affect the joint.Use of NSAIDs ,imaging by X-Rays would help in the assessment.
Based on the description, I suspect the possibility of Temporomandibular joint dysfunction/disorder in your daughter.
She needs a thorough clinical examination to define the exact cause of pain.
In the meantime, the pain can be controlled by medicines like Motrin/Amytryptiline/ etc.
Other modes of treatment includes - * Use of Bite guards (oral splints) * Physical therapy like Ice, moist heat and ultrasound treatment * At times, a single injection of steroid into the joint will help a lot
Hope this information is helpful. Good day
