Taken Renitec Tablet And Lipitor. What Is The Normal Dosage?

I took my Renitec tablet yesterday @ 10 am. I usually take my Lipitor at 10pm and by mistake took a Renitec instead. I had trouble getting to sleep as felt all my sensors where racing. When I woke this morning I realized my mistake and did not know what to do, haven't taken my normal dose today. Should i take my normal dose now?

My name is Doctor Saleem Ur Rehman, and I will answer your question

Dear patient, the usual maintenance dose of Renitec (Enalapril) is 10 mg - 40 mg, so you may safely take two doses of 10 mg without any major side effects. The fact that you couldnt sleep well was probably because of the sudden increase in your dosage. You can take your dose of Renitec as scheduled in the morning. May I advise to set a daily reminder for your drugs on your cell phone? This will certainly help you in remembering your drugs.

In order to reassure you about your drug, I will further like to tell you how drugs are absorbed from your stomach and intestines into the blood.
Whenever you take a drug through mouth, it is slowly absorbed from the stomach or intestines (or even from the mouth e.g. in case of glyceryl trinitrate). Presence of food may alter the absorption of some drugs. But Renitec is not affected by food. So you can take it before, during or after your meal.
The level of drug slowly rises in your blood and achieves the target level over a period of minutes to hours. The target level is when enough drug is present in your body to exert its affects. However, we want to make sure that the drug level doesnt overshoot to the toxic level when its side effects start outweighing the benefits. Afterwards, the drug level comes down as the body excretes it.
So basically, your regular doses are meant to keep your drug level in the target beneficial range i.e. to balance your intake and excretion of drug in such a way that the blood levels remain in the effective range.

So you have been taking a daily 10 mg dose of Renitec tablet which is keeping the drug in the effective. You mistakenly took an extra 10mg dose of renitec tablet (20 mg for the day) which further increased your blood level of the drug. At this point you experienced one of the many side effects of Renitec. However, since the safe dose of Renitec is 10 - 40 mg per day, we can safely assume that your blood levels were within safe range.

When you revert back to the 10mg per day dosage, your blood levels will be restored to the previous levels over a matter of few days. So you can take your 10 am dose of renitec in the morning without fear of any major side effects

I will further like to advise you to avoid potassium rich foods like white beans, spinach, baked potatoes, dried apricots, baked acorn squash, yogurt (plain, Skim/Non-fat), Fish (Salmon), Avocados, Mushrooms and Bananas. You can take some quantity of them. But dont eat them together, or too much.

Wishing you a healthy life.
