Is Blood Pressure Value Of 142/93 A Cause For Concern?

default
Posted on Mon, 4 Jan 2016
Question: I have been using RENITEC(20mg) for the past 2 years. I have for this duration felt like vomiting / nausea before and after eating and time when i feel a bit stressed. I consulted my Doctor and we decided to stop taking the pills and monitor my blood pressure over a time. i do not have those side effects any longer. I have been going for walks, cut on my salt and perhaps a drink a day. I am worried i am still over the Target blood pressure for my age. An average blood pressure over a weeks time is 142/93. I dont want to start taking pills. Dose my blood pressure pose any concern?

Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I read carefully your question and reviewed your reports.

I would like to explain that your blood pressure values are still above the normal ranges. This means that your blood pressure has not been under control with lifestyle modifications and it is necessary starting antihypertensive therapy.

You should know that antihypertensive therapies are based on the individual characteristics and tolerance. When one certain drug shows to have adverse effects we can switch to another and see what happens.

The benefits of antihypertensive therapy be reducing your cardiovascular risk, are much higher than the possible adverse effects related to antihypertensive therapy.

What were your blood pressure values while taking Renitec 20mg?

Coming to this point, I would recommend starting losartan 50 mg as it is an ARB class drug (different from Renitec) and it is known to have less adverse effects compared to Renitec.

You should discuss on these issues with your attending physician.

Meanwhile, I recommend maintaining this lifestyle (low salt and caffeine intake and a lot of physical activity) and try to lose weight if you are overweight.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Greetings!

Dr. Iliri

Thank you Dr. IIir for a rapid reply. I have a prescription of Losartan 50 mg which my physician prescribed for me some time back when the side effects (vomiting / nausea) on Renitec 20mg was too much for me. There were times i couldn't eat because the smell of food made me feel like vomiting. I will speak to him and start taking Losartan 50 mg as you suggest.

I didn't take regular blood pressure values while taking Renitec 20mg medication.

I weight 84kg (185Lbs) i am physically active. I dont smoke, very little caffeine intake. I take a can of beer or glass of wine with dinner. Other than that moderate party drinking once in a while.

Will a moderate use of alkohol be a problem taking Losartan 50 mg medication? Are there any side effects with Losartan 50 mg?

Thank you.

Opinion as follows:

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,

As you are not markedly over-weighted (84 kg in an average body height), no smoking and physically active, your average BP values doesn't pose any great risk.

So, 50 mg Losartan would be acceptable for a mild hypertension.

No adverse interactions exist between alcohol and Losartan. Nevertheless, I recommend reducing a bit the level of daily alcohol intake.

A glass of wine or a cup of beer is OK, but not more than that.

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri

Hello Dr. Iliri,

I see very much improvement in my blood pressure reading since i started taking Losartan 50 mg. The last 3 days blood pressure reading has an average of 135/85, still in the maximum range of my age, but will consider it okay.

Regarding side effects i have not felt like vomiting / nausea which i am very happy for. On the other hand i have felt on 2 occasions whiles sleeping at night that i loss my breath, which wakes me up in full panic. Have you ever heard any side effects of this kind? Is there something i need to test on?

Thank you.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again!

I am glad that losartan seems to be effective in lowering your blood pressure, without showing and obvious adverse effects.

The episodes you refer don't seem to be relate to losartan adverse effects.

This may be just a sleep disorder (nightmare) or sleep apnea.

If this situation repeats, I recommend consulting with a neurologist and performing a polysomnography.

Hope to have been of help!

Best regards!

Dr. Iliri
