Swollen Lymph Nodes Under Both Arm Pits, Painful, Growing. Is It An Infection?

Hi I am a 22 year old female. I have swollen lymph nodes under both of my armpits. After doing research infection seems to be the number one cause, but I was not sick before they appeared. They are very painful and seem to be growing. If it was not caused from an infection, what is another common reason for this? And what signs should I see before deciding to go to a doctor for this?

Hi,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic,
You have swollen lymph nodes in armpit (Axilla) Infection bacterial is one of the common cause in which pain and redness is there with fever.
Other causes are Tuberculosis, Viral infection chickenpox and shingles (herpes zoster), Allergies like sulfa drugs, Iodine, Vaccine. HIV Infection and Cancer (Lymphoma)
You should visit doctor who after examination will know what type of swelling is there and analgesic and anti inflammatory and antibiotics will be required and if abscess is there surgery may be required.
If Lymph node is there and cause is not clear its excision and biopsy may be required to know the cause.
Once cause is known it can be treated accordingly.
Hope this helps
Take care.
Good Luck.
