I am 54 and have Uterine Fibroids. It has caused extremely heavy periods for the last 2 years. My original doctor who discovered the fibroids and had a CT done said I was near enough to menopause that the real concern was iron levels due to the loss of blood. My last two periods are a little lighter and seem to be flowing more clear liquid in the blood. I am still clotting though not as severely. Does this mean I am heading into menopause, meaning I may be near the end of this process or is this more serious and should be checked by a physician and if so what type of physician. I lost my first great doctor and the new one I went to seemed at a loss for my concerns.
Hello, Thanks for trusting us with your health concern. Here are some suggestions for your problem. 1. Scanty menstruation at your age, increased spacing between periods or abnormal menstrual pattern at your age is indicative of approaching menopause. However, this needs to be clinically confirmed by a gynecologist and also through hormone assays and a sonogram of the pelvis. 2. As menopause appears, the vascular supply to the uterus deteriorates and hence, the fibroids tend to shrink. This is why observation is advised towards menopause. 3. Your general condition needs to be improved and monitoring should be done through blood counts before any management is planned to treat the fibroids. Coagulation profile should be monitored. Hope I have clarified your query. Wish you good health.
