Suggest Treatment For Swollen Lymph Nodes And Soreness In The Neck

Hello, I noticed what I believe to be a bite of some kind just above the bend of my left arm about a week ago. It didn t look like a problem until yesterday when I noticed red around it about 2 inches in circumference. As I stretched my neck while shaving I noticed that my neck was sore and swollen at the lymph node on the left side. I went to a walk in clinic and the only person attending was a PA. She stated that she would have expected that the nodes in my arm pit would have swollen first. She gave me some antibiotics and sent me on my way. Today the Lymph node in my neck is more swollen and more tender. Is this reason for concern?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Brief answer: Swollen systemic lymph nodes are a bit of concern need some investigations.

Explanation: My opinion is that the bite in your arm normally develops into inflammation, redness, hotness, tenderness, and related lymph node swelling that means the lymph node under your armpit for example. Swollen neck lymph node is not related to original lesion, bad dentures or oral infections or even scalp crusting can lead to this swelling.

I suggest my patients the following: Continue on antibiotic course, excision biopsy may be needed, some labs like CBC, CRP. The information provided by you is not sufficient to provide a good opinion. If someone comes to me with this condition I would ask them about any cause for neck swelling, also rest of medical history, accompanying symptoms like lethargy fever, etc.

Conclusion: I suggest you check with your general physician for more investigation and assessment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mahmmad Gamal
