Suggest Treatment For Swelling In Tongue

My 19 year old daughter had her tonsils and adenoids removed Monday. Immediately after surgery her tongue is swollen and she was itching. The doctor said the itching is from anesthesia and the swollen tongue is from the tool used during surgery. I expected the swelling to go down soon, but it is still there and this is Friday. the surgeon saw her on Thursday and said it isnt a problem. My daughter has lost 8 lbs (issues with pain meds and not eating then vomiting). She is no longer taking the Vicatin but is now taking Tylenol and is doing better with the vomiting. Has her tongue been had damaged in some way? This doesnt seem normal. My daughter said this swollen tongue is her main issue right now. She can't eat because of it. What is your opinion?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand..

As per your complain swelling of tongue and itching both can be due to side effect of anaesthesia and can also be due to the allergic reaction or side effect of medicines that she might be taking post treatment..
You should consult an allergist or an emergency room and get evaluated and he can advise you to take anti allergic medicines like benadryl and also he can advise you to take anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen..
He can also advise you to change the medication..
In case if the swelling is due to anaesthesia it will be resolved as the effect of anaesthesia will wean off..
If swelling over tongue is in excess it needs immediate medical care as it can lead to difficulty in breathing and cause suffocation..
In that case injectable anti allergics and steroids can be advised..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
