Hi Dear,

You are informing that you got your periods after about 7 weeks. That is not normal as you know. Normal menstrual cycles are about 28 days long, though it can range from 21 to 35 days. Yours is not in this range.

The most common reason to have irregular cycles in women is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, also known as PCOS. It is a very common problem and can occur in 1 out of 10 women.

Let me explain you a little normal phenomenon in our body. We have a hormone producing gland, pituitary gland, in our brain. This gland secretes LH and FSH, two female sex hormones signals. These two signals reach the ovaries and signal them to make female sex hormones, estrogen and progesterone. They make eggs then that shed out during menstruation. Little bit of male sex hormone, testosterone, is also produced which is normal.

Now, in PCOS, there is some imbalance in hormones. In simple terms, the ovaries don't get right signals from the pituitary. So ovaries don't make eggs regularly each month and this causes irregular or absent periods.

The daily pills that you have been prescribed help to regulate your ovulation and menstruation. The sonography on 27th is to check the status of your ovaries for diagnosis of cysts and whether ovulation has happened or not.

In any case, this disease is not life threatening and is curable. Regular medications can surely make ovulations and periods regular. So there is no need for worry. Just follow the prescriptions and advise of your prescribing doctor and let us know if you have any queries.

I hope this information helps. Thank you for choosing HealthCareMagic. Take care!

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
