Suggest Treatment For Abdominal Pain In Case Of Gastroenteritis

I have recently been diagnosed with Gastroenteritis after bad reaction to taking Voltarin and paracetemol/ codiene phosphate tablets for what I thought was a strained muscle. Home now 5 days- now eating very small meals and attempting to hydrate as much as possible. nausea seems to have gone but pain at bottom of ribs on right side is persisting as in dull ache. this is a waist height and if I put my hand on my waist (as you do naturally) that covers the approx pain zone. I have now been lying on my back for 6 days because this is most comfortable position. Still a bit week from not eating much too. I am taking Paracetamol tabs 2 500mg every 4 hours until I realised that s too many per 24 hours. doesn t always stop pain but I notice when it is wearing off. ususally before the four hours.also taking Omeprazole. thank you, Gayle

General & Family Physician 's  Response
It could be possible that the gastroenteritis or the episode that you are talking about, has caused you electrolyte imbalance with loss of a mineral called potassium. This in turn can lead to muscle weakness and spasms resulting in the pain you are talking about. Taking juicy fruits like citrus fruits which contain a lot of potassium, should be helpful. It might be worthwhile to take some muscle relaxant tablet twice daily for a day or two. Upto 4 gm of paracetamol can be taken per day. If you need more, you basically need some other medicine.
