Suggest Remedy For Lost Feeling In Legs From Knees Down, Swollen Legs After Having Epidural For Childbirth

My daughter-in-law had a epidural on Tuesday while giving birth. Now two days later still can not feel her legs from the knees down. Both legs are also swollen from the knees down and unable to walk. What should the doctor be doing and do we need to get a neurologist for her?

Hello,
I have gone through your query and understood your concern. Epidural analgesia has the disadvantage of lowering the muscle tone for sometime after the injection. This may be the reason for the swelling of the lower limbs as the venous return needs muscle contraction to be optimal. This weakness of the muscles also can be the cause of the inability to walk along with loss of sensation. Numbness is usually felt for a few hours after the procedure. Since she cannot feel anything even after two days she needs a proper assessment by a neurologist. The type of epidural analgesia given also should be known to plan further management. Hope you find this information useful. Take care.
