Suggest Remedy For Heavy And Prolonged Periods

I am 32 years old, 158 pounds, 5'4 and I have 3 children. They are 7 and 8 years old and my third child is 8 months old now. I have never before had a problem with my period. It has always been regular. Now for 8 months now, ever since I gave birth to my last child, my period is very heavy and won't stop. For the most part there is no pain or cramps. Occasionally my period will stop for 2 weeks and then start again. Sometimes before it starts again I feel a sharp pressure and pain for about 10 minutes on my left pelvic side. Is this normal to be bleeding so long? How do I know when I have lost too much blood?
