Suggest Remedy For Difficulty In Hearing

I am recovering from what I believe is a mild case of the Flu and I am sufferring from problems in both ears. It feels like they have popped and low frequency sounds completely overpower high frequency. I cannot hear anything external when I am eating or talking, there is however no associated pain. Is this normal or should I see my GP?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Yes, you should see a GP and get a referral to an ENT Surgeon if indicated so. The commonest cause is movement of fluid and infection from back of nose to the middle ears through Eustachian tubes. This causes local reaction and increases fluid to cause reduced hearing, sense of blockage and pain.

The treatment is as follows:
* Nasal and oral decongestants
* Anti-inflammatory medicine such as Ibuprofen if it suits you
* Prescription based antibiotic
* Do not blow nose
* Do not instill anything in ears

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
