Suggest Remedies For Water Break At 41 Weeks

Hi.

I am in the 41 week and my water broke today and there are no contractions at all! Is it ok to wait for 24 hours or so! I want to avoid the C section as much as I can. Would you suggest induced delivery? Can the doctor so the vaginal exam with the himen still there? Thanks

Hi
You must first go to the hospital and get admitted. Your doctor will do an ultrasound to make sure your baby is doing fine. Then she will perform an internal examination with sterile gloves to see the status of the cervix ( neck of the womb). She will see if the cervix is soft and dilated. If so it suggests that you will be starting labor shortly.

If the baby is doing fine and there are no signs of labor, no signs of infection and no contraindications for induction of labor, then you have two options.
1. Start induction of labor
2. Wait for 24 hours awaiting spontaneous onset of labor.
There is no difference in the outcome to mother or baby between the two methods of management. If you choose to have labor induced it is not going to increase your chances of having cesarean section. Don't worry about it.
If you choose to wait for 24 hours, you must have labor induced after 24 hours as after that the chances of infection to baby increase.
I hope I have answered to your satisfaction.
